Azmat appointed Gazipur Unnayan Kartripakkha chair
Gazipur City Awami League President Azmat Ullah has been appointed as chairman of Gazipur Unnayan Kartripakkha.
The public administration ministry yesterday issued a notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Rafiqul Islam, in this regard yesterday.
The decision came nine days after Azmat faced defeat in Gazipur city polls to independent candidate Zaida Khatun, mother of suspended Gazipur mayor and expelled AL leader Zahangir Alam.
According to the notification, Azmat Ullah will serve as the chairman of Gazipur Unnayan Kartripakkha for the next three years.
However, this appointment is subject to the condition that he must leave any other positions he holds in other organisations or institutions.
Gazipur Unnayan Kartripakkha, constituted in 2020, mainly formulates mega plans for the city development. It also approves structural designs to make the fast-growing city a planned, liveable and environment-friendly urban area.
Azmat is now working to reorganise Gazipur district and city units of the AL after he lost the mayoral polls.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on May 28 asked Azmat about the reasons why he lost. She also wanted to know the number of votes he got in the neighbourhoods of certain party leaders and MPs. Azmat then presented the prime minister with voting data, according to sources.
Hasina told Azmat to visit each ward of the city and talk to local leaders to reorganise the party, the sources added.
